Overview

Levolor specializes in window covering solutions. They were planning on releasing new smart shades and blinds. They asked us to create an app that would help pair and manage Levolor smart products in homes.

Overview

Challenge

The Levolor app would allow users to control their window shades or manage routines from any iOS or Android phone. Our goal was to make pairing shades an easy process with simple to follow instructions. The number of shades people own could be different, but we wanted the experience to still be great in any use case.

Challenge

Structure

We were able to meet with the Levolor team and collaborate in a design workshop. We had a list of features that we were able to place on a board to generate a user story map. This was then used as a guide once we moved on to wireframes and refined the navigation.

Final Product

The Levolor App was designed to allow owners of Levolor smart shades and remotes to easily manage and control their devices. The experience works managing homes with only a single device or with multiple devices. It's easy to view shade position and status with visuals mirroring actual device states.

Pairing Devices

We wanted the pairing device flow to be easy to follow. One challenge here was possibly having multiple devices so there is an identify action for each to get started. I also created illustrations to display interactions with the physical devices in the pairing process.

Home Layout and Controls

From the Home section, you are able to view shade status organized into different areas of your home. Since remotes can control multiple rooms or shades it made sense to put them in their own tab. At a glance, you can see which shades are open or closed. By tapping on a device you are presented with the controls and settings.

Routines

In the Routines section of the app, users have the ability to create manual or scheduled routines. Manual routines have to be triggered by a user in the app and scheduled automatically run at the set time. Individual or multiple shades can be selected to be a part of routines with custom settings for each.

Outcome

The Levolor app design was created to work with some new smart products that would need updated functionality. The product lineup ended up being put on hold, so the app has not been released. Working with hardware requirements and the challenges supporting different generations of shades and remotes was a great learning experience.
